Siena is a lovely town dating as far back as the 11th century, its medieval architecture well preserved in part thanks to the fact that the historical center was partially closed to traffic long before other Italian cities took the same measures. Thanks to its central position, Siena makes a great homebase for organizing daytrips to some of the hilltowns such as Montepulciano or Pienza, to San Galgano or San Gimignano, in the Chianti wine country or even to Florence, knowing that you can come home to a nice peaceful city like Siena for the night.
Siena is a beautiful medieval town in the middle of the hilly wine regions of Chianti (to the north) and Brunello (to the south). Its historical center is excellently preserved and partially closed to traffic, and is admired worldwide for its stone streets, medieval architecture, and the stupendous Piazza del Campo, where the unique horse race Il Palio takes place twice a year (2 July and 16 August). Siena is famous for its food, wine, and art, but especially for the Palio, a unique horse race whose origins date back earlier than the 1300s.
